How To Remove Soap Scum Stains From Bathroom Splashbacks

Posted on

A custom-made glass splashback can provide a really unique focal point in your bathroom design.  However, because of their position in the room, bathroom glass splashbacks do tend to quickly accumulate splats of toothpaste and soap scum residue that can leave them looking murky and dull.

Here's how to keep your bathroom splashback looking spotless in a few easy steps.

Tools for the job

  • clean, soft cloths
  • water
  • washing-up liquid
  • spray-on glass cleaner

How to do it

Most of the stains on your bathroom splashback should come off relatively easily.  Never be tempted to use steel wool or abrasive cleaning pads on your glass splashback, as these can leave minute scratches on the surface.  Over time, these scratches will damage the surface of the glass, leaving it looking milky and dull.

Soap scum can quickly build-up in a bathroom environment and if left to accumulate for too long, it can be stubborn to remove.  It's therefore recommended that you clean your splashback at least twice a week to make the job quick and simple.

  1. Start by making a fairly strong solution of washing-up liquid and hot water.  Use a clean cloth to apply a generous amount of the solution to the splashback.  If there is a lot of soap scum on the glass, you'll need to leave the solution to soak-in for five minutes.
  2. Now, wipe over the splashback, using a smooth, circular motion and making sure that you cover the whole thing, right to the edges.
  3. Now rinse away the cleaning solution with warm water and a clean cloth.  You may need to give the splashback several rinses, as the soap scum that has loosened might foam-up.
  4. When the splashback is clean, wipe it over with dry cloths until it's dry.  Have a good look over the surface to make sure that all the soap scum is gone.  If there's any left, repeat step #1, step #2, and step #3.
  5. Once you're happy that the glass splashback is clean, finish off the job by applying a light spritz of spray glass cleaner to the splashback and polishing it up.  Use a soft cloth to give the glass a final buffing up so that it's really gleaming.

In conclusion

You can keep your glass bathroom splashback looking great by tackling soap scum stains as described above.  Remember to do this job a couple of times each week to prevent accumulations of dirt and make this a quick and simple task.
